Potash is a key plant nutrient, critical to increasing food production and quality over a broad range of crops. There are various crop production factors necessary to achieving higher yields and balanced fertilization is the main factor required to achieve a higher yield. Over 90% of potash production goes into fertilizer applications and, as a result, agriculture is the primary driver for potash demand.
Currently global potash demand totals approximately 60 million tonnes per year. Demand growth is a result of population and economic growth, increasing consumption, a shift to more protein-based diets, limited arable land, and increasing crop yields.
The World Needs Potash
According to the FAO, approximately 80% of the growth in global crop production over the next 40 years will come from improvement in crop yields. Crop yields in developing countries currently lag significantly behind those in the developed world. The adoption of increased and balanced fertilizer application is expected to play a major role in increasing crop yields.
