Milk Month Draws the Largest Support for the Milk for Children Program

in the community

With the support of the public and Canpotex, the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre (SFBLC) raised the largest amount ever for their Milk for Children Program during Milk Month, totalling $133,511. This unprecedented level of support will provide 93,365 litres of milk to the community.

The SFBLC recognizes September as Milk Month each year. All month long, the Food Bank raises awareness and funds in support of its Milk for Children Program.

For the past four years, Canpotex has stepped up to support this critical program by matching all public donations in the month of September up to $50,000. This year, Canpotex went even further by providing an additional $10,000 stemming from a social media campaign they ran throughout September.

Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of the SFBLC, says, “The support from Canpotex during Milk Month allows the community an opportunity to rally together and raise funds that go directly back to families who need it. The Milk for Children Program supports families in times of crisis so they can focus on other issues. Perhaps the most significant impact this program has on the recipients is the message it sends to families; that they matter, and that their community is here to support them during tough times.”

“Initiatives like the Milk for Children Program are vitally important to the health of our communities, and that is why we are thrilled this year we were able to make our largest donation to the program yet,” says Canpotex CEO Gord McKenzie. “Food security is an issue all over the world and Canpotex has a significant role in addressing it both overseas and here in our home community, especially when it relates to our communities’ children.”

O’Connor adds, “We are grateful to Canpotex for being a partner we can count on. Their partnership gives us confidence that children in the community will receive the nutrition they need during the early stages of childhood development and beyond.”

The Milk for Children Program at the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre ensures that children have access to fresh milk as part of their diet. For many children in our city, access to nutrient-rich milk is as simple as a visit to the family fridge. But for children growing up in low-income households struggling to make ends meet, waking up to a bowl of cereal or enjoying a warm glass of milk before bed is far from their everyday reality.
